NOLAN I remember I was up in San Francisco writing Batman Begins and there was something in the San Francisco Chronicle about 28 Days Later. I saw a picture of you with your shaved head and your crazy eyes — no offense. I remember being struck by your presence, literally from that one photograph, and then started to look into who you were, and what you'd done, and got very excited about the idea of meeting you, and having. you screen test for Batman.

놀란: 그때 저는 샌프란시스코에서 배트맨 비긴즈를 쓰고 있었는데, <샌프란시스코 크로니클>에서 '28년 후'에 대한 기사를 읽었죠. 거기서 머리를 민 상태로 눈을 희번득이는 당신의 사진을 봤어요. 그 사진 한 장에 드러난 존재감에 꽂혀서 당신이 누구이고 어떤 작품들을 했는지 찾기 시작했죠. 그리고 직접 만나서 배트맨으로 스크린 테스트를 진행하고 싶었어요.

킬리언이랑 놀란의 인연은 영화 배트맨 비긴즈에 킬리언이 배트맨 역할로 오디션을 본 것 부터 시작됨

 

킬리언은 본인도 자기가 배트맨역에 안어울린다는걸 알고있었는데 일단 어떤 역할이든 출연하고 싶어서 지원했고

놀란도 킬리언이 배트맨이랑 안어울린다고 생각은 했는데

자기 호텔방에서 배트맨 슈트 입고 카메라 테스트까지 받게함

 

결국은 메인 빌런중 하나인 닥터크레인/스캐어크로우 역할로 출연시킴

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MURPHY I was simply a fan. I had seen Memento, and I had seen Insomnia, and then I went back and watched Following. I was a real fan of Chris' work at that time. That's around 2003, which is 20 years ago, which ages us terribly!

 

킬리언: 저는 단순히 팬이었고요. 메멘토랑 인썸니아를 봤고 미행도 봤어요. 그때 당시엔 크리스 영화의 빅 팬이었거든요. 2003년 무렵이니까 20년 전이네요. 세월이 엄청나게 흘렀어요!

 

NOLAN It's a long time. You came out to L.A. for the screen test and we had dinner at a hotel. I felt an immediate connection. I felt like, this is somebody that I want to work with, somebody who has an interesting take on things creatively.

 

놀란: 긴 시간이죠. 그때 당신이 스크린테스트를 하러 LA로 왔고 우리는 호텔에서 함께 저녁을 먹었잖아요. 뭔가 통한다는 게 곧바로 느껴졌죠. 함께 작업하고 싶은, 창의적인 면이 있는 흥미로운 사람이라고 생각했어요.

 

 

 

MURPHY It was clear to me from the beginning that I wasn't Batman material. It felt to me that it was correct and right that it should be Christian Bale for that part. But I remember the buzz of trying on the suit and being directed by you. Those tests were high production values.

 

킬리언: 전 제가 배트맨을 맡을 만한 사람이 아니라는 걸 처음부터 잘 알고 있었어요. 그 역은 크리스찬 베일이 맡는 게 당연하다고 생각했죠. 하지만 수트를 입고 당신의 디렉팅을 받는 건 들뜨는 일이었어요. 그때 받은 테스트들은 상당히 수준 높았고요.

 

NOLAN When we had our first conversation I think both of us knew that you weren't going to wind up playing Batman. But I really wanted to get on set with you, I wanted to get you on film. We did those screen tests very elaborately, on 35mm, with a little set. There was just an electric atmosphere in the crew when you started to perform. We did two scenes — there was a Bruce Wayne scene and a Batman scene — and I made sure that executives came down and watched what you were doing on set. Everybody was so excited by watching you perform that when I then said to them, "Okay, Christian Bale is Batman, but what about Cillian to play Scarecrow?" there was no dissent. All the previous Batman villains had been played by huge movie stars: Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, that kind of thing. That was a big leap for them and it really was purely on the basis of that test. So that's how you got to play Scarecrow.

 

놀란: 우리가 처음 이야기를 나누었을 땐 당신이 배트맨을 맡지 않으리라는 걸 둘 다 알고 있었던 것 같아요. 하지만 난 당신을 세트에 데려다 놓고 싶었고, 영화에 출연시키고 싶었죠. 우린 작은 세트에서 35mm 카메라로 아주 공들여서 스크린 테스트를 진행했어요. 당신이 연기를 시작하자 스텝들 사이엔 짜릿한 기운이 감돌았죠. 우리는 브루스웨인 씬과 배트맨 씬 두 장면을 테스트했고, 나는 제작사 임원들을 불러서 당신이 연기하는 모습을 확실히 볼 수 있게 했어요. 다들 당신의 연기에 잔뜩 들떴고, 내가 "자, 크리스찬 베일이 배트맨이고, 킬리언은 스케어크로우를 하는 건 어때요?"라고 말했을 때 반대하는 사람은 한 명도 없었어요. 이전의 배트맨 악역은 모두 유명한 배우들이 맡아서 했죠. 잭 니콜슨, 아놀드 슈워제네거, 짐 캐리 같은 분들 말이에요. 제작사는 아주 큰 결심을 한 것이고 이건 순전히 스크린 테스트를 보고 내린 결정이었어요. 그렇게 당신이 스케어크로우를 하게 됐죠.
